The Internet2/Azure Accelerator for Research launched in August with a call for project proposals. Five projects were selected to participate in the Fall 2022 Cohort. Teams from these projects showcased their final findings and cloud-optimized research workflows in a virtual presentation.

This was a hands-on virtual workshop, providing a conceptual understanding of COmanage, an identity registry with flexible enrollment and lifecycle management capabilities that helps you meet your identity management objectives. The workshop provided the technical know-how to get this solution up and running.

This event was designed specifically for chief information officers, regional executives, and executive leadership of all Internet2 member organizations.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is on its way towards having passwordless logins. Seven months ago, the university launched a pilot to test its implementation of WebAuthn, known locally as Carolina Key. This new feature of the UNC web-based single sign-on (SSO) utilizes device-specific authentications, such as hardware security keys and fingerprint or face recognition.

Carolina Key eliminates the need to use passwords when logging into many web applications. Students can begin registering devices for Carolina Key at the end of this month while this option will be available for faculty and staff in 2023.

Software Engineer Tariq Wilson will discuss the design of, and key decisions made during, the development process. Learn how they might be applicable as you consider making passwordless authentication a reality at your institution.

The Internet2 NET+ team is excited to announce the release of NET+ Kion, one of the leading cloud enablement solution providers. In response to calls from the research and education community for account automation, cost management, and security monitoring tools for cloud enablement across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, Internet2 is collaborating with Kion.

A dozen member institutions worked hard throughout the summer to vet the service, and the result of their efforts is a solid addition to the NET+ service portfolio. During this webinar we explored this new offering.

Part 2 of the webinar series with Nokia featured a discussion on coherent transmission and how baud rate affects middle mile distances and fiber usage. This session looked at IP over Optics and use cases for ZR+ optics over an open DWDM line system to help reduce cost and enhance sustainability.

This virtual workshop focused on the InCommon Trusted Access Platform packaged software — including configuration and operation. Both the Identity and Service Provider packages can be pre-configured to integrate out of the box with the InCommon Federation using recommended defaults.

Did you know that DocuSign’s APIs and SDKs allow you unlimited options to leverage the DocuSign platform? University of Maryland Baltimore County is leveraging DocuSign’s powerful APIs for integrations with Box, ImageNow, Peoplesoft, Data Warehouse, and other systems.

Internet2 welcomed current and prospective Affiliate and Federal Affiliate members for a Town Hall meeting on Sept. 30. Affiliate members included non-profit organizations (excluding K-12 schools) that are research- and/or education-oriented. Federal Affiliate members included federal government departments, agencies, laboratories, and other like units.

The event features an update regarding network-based solutions such as Cloud Connect and the introduction of Oracle FastConnect into our Cloud Connect offerings. We also heard from a few Affiliate and Federal Affiliate members, including the newest Affiliate member organization to join the community.

Grouper simplifies access management by letting you use the same group or role in many places in your organization. It automates changes to access privileges as a person’s role changes. It empowers the right people to manage access, taking central IT out of the loop. This virtual class spanned four half days.

Grouper is used in the InCommon Trusted Access Platform architecture to manage attribute, role-based authorization services and group memberships in an auditable way based on institutional data from systems of record.

The last year has seen some big changes for the eduroam service, from new infrastructure to new user interface to new ways to deploy eduroam at scale for new communities. We provided you an overview of what’s changed, how it’s changed, and features and capabilities that are coming soon to your eduroam.

During the COVID-19 pandemic communication networks have provided an essential lifeline for work, school, our health, information, and entertainment during this challenging time at a level which has no historical precedent.

Work from home and learn from home is likely to play a larger role in the way we live even after the virus threat has subsided. At the same time, industry is evolving to exploit the benefit of being “Always Connected” in new ways driven by increased demand, new opportunities, and the benefits of cloud-based processing.

This benefit was formerly only provided to consumers but now, through the adoption of 5G, is extended to machines and brings with it new and severe requirements which challenge the new applications, the networks that serve them, the data centers which host them, and the devices throughout which enable them. The principal challenge is the evolution of our networks from the “set and forget” best effort networks to new dynamic and deterministic networks of tomorrow.

The Minority Serving – Cyberinfrastructure Consortium (MS-CC) and Internet2, in collaboration with the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC), are organizing a series of cyberinfrastructure and cybersecurity workshops on the campuses of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and tribal colleges and universities (TCUs). The National Science Foundation is funding the workshops as part of their recent Cyberinfrastructure Center of Excellence Demonstration Pilot award (NSF #2137123).

This workshop was held at Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, Mont.

The cybersecurity workshops provide hands-on learning experiences for information technology leadership and staff from HBCUs and TCUs focused on strategies and tactics to improve their institution’s cybersecurity posture, as well as defend against and effectively respond to the growing threat of ransomware attacks.

The workshops were held at NC A&T State University and Salish Kootenai College. There will be upcoming workshops at Alabama A&M University, Claflin University, and Jackson State University this fall. Additional workshops at HBCUs are under consideration.

The webinar, “You Need Structure: A Panel Discussion with Internet2 NET+ ServiceNow Institutions on Governance” was held on Wednesday, July 27.

The discussion examined how to determine which projects and initiatives should have priority? Three panelists whose campuses combined have close to two decades of experience leveraging the capabilities of Internet2 NET+ ServiceNow to establish and implement governance structures.

The panelists were:

What would it take to rid the world of passwords? This question has been asked for many years and led to standards like U2F, UAF, FIDO2, and WebAuthn. We’re now in 2022, adoption is still low, and 2FA phishing is on the rise. As an industry, we have all the pieces and plumbing, so how do we enable strong, phishing-resistant authentication for the masses who don’t have security keys?

During this webinar, we looked at the evolving landscape for strong, phishing-resistant authentication and take a deep dive on passkey—the experiences it enables and the standards that are making it possible. We also discussed what this means for the education community.

Internet2 spent 2021 moving our eduroam infrastructure to better support the scaling of our service to primary and secondary schools, as well as museums, libraries, and other public locations that might be available to students. The webinar allowed participants to reflect on our journey so far; how community input informed the migration, where the eduroam service is today, and how to influence the future direction and growth of the service.

The Minority Serving – Cyberinfrastructure Consortium (MS-CC) and Internet2 are presenting a series of ransomware security and cyberinfrastructure workshops beginning in June 2022 to be held on the campuses of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and tribal colleges and universities (TCUs). The first workshop took place June 22-23 on the North Carolina A&T State University campus in Greensboro, NC.

The cybersecurity workshops provide hands-on learning experiences for information technology leadership and staff from HBCUs and TCUs focused on strategies and tactics to improve their institution’s cybersecurity posture, as well as defend against and effectively respond to the growing threat of ransomware attacks.

If the NC A&T State University workshop is not geographically convenient for you, there will be subsequent workshops at Alabama A&M University, Claflin University, Salish Kootenai College, and Jackson State University. Additional workshops at HBCUs are under consideration.

“Making Sense of Cloud Computing for Research: It’s Not Just Lift and Shift!” was led by Scott Friedman, Amazon Web Services (AWS). Scott will talk about hybrid computing, cloud bursting, and leveraging existing solutions and tools for cloud-native research workflows.

This webinar was hosted by Internet2’s Cloud Learning and Skills Sessions (CLASS) program, which fills the gaps in training for cloud and research computing.

InCommon BaseCAMP is geared toward those new to identity and access management, new to InCommon, or both. This virtual workshop focused on the basics of identity and access management, an introduction to the InCommon Federation, and overviews and demonstrations of the community-developed identity and access management suite, the InCommon Trusted Access Platform.

The 3^rd Internet Reunion Club public session focused on “Using the Internet” (as opposed to building the internet) in the period between 1983 to 1992, i.e. before the web/browser. The session featured a panel of speakers and internet pioneers from the period who gave short talks, and then answered questions from participants.

This high-level, hands-on virtual learning experience with AWS combined exposure to cloud services and terminology. This virtual course was  designed for cloud computing beginners looking to facilitate or develop research workflows on the cloud.

The four-hour, virtual interactive course introduced the “what” and “how” of cloud computing for research using AWS. Participants had an immersive experience on the basic concepts of cloud computing and left with knowledge of how to compute, provision storage, and build research workflows in the cloud.

The I2 Leadership Exchange was held in person in Denver, Colo. on May 23—25. This event was designed specifically for and open exclusively to Chief Information Officers, Regional Executives, and executive leadership of all Internet2 member organizations.

Grouper training was held on May 17-20, 2022. Participants leveraged Grouper to solve common access management problems.

The Grouper component offered management of institutional and personal groups, roles, and permissions for use by project managers, departments, institutions, and end users to:

• load institutional cohorts from systems of record
• manage policies centrally for applications
• share roles among multiple collaborative tools
• audit who has access and when
• provision entitlements to LDAP, SAML, messaging, and services.

This YouTube livestream event featured a conversation with Lawrence Williams, program director of the Minority Serving-Cyberinfrastructure Consortium.  Get the latest on tech trends on I2 Tech Talk and the people who make innovation happen for a variety of community members in research and education. Internet2 Director of Industry Engagement Ben Fineman interviews guests from the community to showcase exciting developments.

When digitizing your university’s paperwork processes, you have lots of options, but some are better designed for research and education than others.

Carahsoft, in collaboration with Internet2 NET+, provided a DocuSign webinar on May 3 to learn how the University of Pittsburgh and Virginia Commonwealth University are leveraging DocuSign eSignature to digitize agreements, saving these institutions time while increasing privacy and security.

In addition, get details on how your organization can take advantage of the NET+ DocuSign service.

midPoint, powered by Evolveum, is a general-purpose identity management and governance system used by the InCommon Trusted Access Platform. midPoint can synchronize and reconcile among multiple systems of record and sources of identity, as well as to provision and de-provision user accounts and groups into services.

This course was intended for identity management architects, identity management system engineers and deployment partners who will customize, deploy and support midPoint Identity Manager in a way that integrates with the InCommon Trusted Access Platform components.

In honor of Earth Day, we turned our attention to the environment. Digital Transformation can drive improved student outcomes, speed time to science, and increase agility within higher education institutions. Higher education leadership, responding to student and faculty demands, look to incorporate sustainability goals and practices into the university experience. In this session, we talked about sustainability transformation, how it’s being approached at Amazon and AWS, and actions higher education customers can take to incorporate sustainability into their digital transformation efforts.

At the helm, those in information technology leadership positions are posed with an immense question – how do I make that happen at my institution? This event featured in-depth conversations with chief information officers who have implemented identity and access management (IAM) solutions for strategic connections and collaboration across their campuses and beyond.

Globus is a widely used platform for research data management among Internet2 members. While many institutions use Globus primarily for reliable file transfer, the platform has evolved to provide a comprehensive set of data management capabilities.

In this online event, we described major enhancements made over the past two years, and demonstrated new features and APIs that support the development of applications in service of research. Topics included the new architecture for Globus Connect Server, support for additional cloud storage systems, services for data search and discovery, and various capabilities for automating large-scale data flows.

This Open Meeting about the Minority Serving-Cyberinfrastructure Consortium (MS-CC) included updates on the NSF Pilot Center of Excellence Award, MS-CC needs and requirements, stakeholders, and next steps for the community to get involved. The moderators facilitated a Question and Answer session about the MS-CC for participants.

The MS-CC envisions a transformational partnership to promote advanced cyberinfrastructure (CI) capabilities on HBCU, HSI, TCU, and MSI campuses. Together with the community, the MS-CC is advancing connections across campuses around data, research computing, teaching, curriculum development, professional development, and capacity building.
