No detours, no delays, and no outages — that’s the goal for research and education (R&E) networks powering today’s data-intensive science. To reach that goal, network operators need robust tools that provide enhanced visibility and operational awareness, helping them detect and defend against threats like route leaks, hijacks, and misconfigurations.

UC San Diego’s Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) and Internet2 are collaborating to make that possible through a new project called ROOTBEER, or Routing Operations Observational Technology: Building to Enable Education and Research.

“For decades, the research community has lacked the operational visibility needed to truly secure scientific data flows across the internet. ROOTBEER is our effort to change that — by shining a light on routing anomalies in real time, we’re empowering network operators to protect the integrity of research traffic.” KC Claffy, Founder and Principal Investigator, CAIDA

The project is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF grant no. OAC-2530871). It is led by KC Claffy, CAIDA founder and principal investigator, with co-leads Steven Wallace, Internet2 director of routing integrity, and Matthew Luckie, consulting research scientist at CAIDA.

ROOTBEER will be a topic of discussion at the 2025 Internet2 Technology Exchange, Dec. 8-12 in Denver. The Dec. 10 session, Introducing Internet2’s Online RPKI-ROA Planning Tool, will include a demonstration of the new routing security tool in development as part of the project.
