Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

As colleges and universities navigate the demands of data-intensive research, the strategic planning of cyberinfrastructure has emerged as a critical institutional priority.

An upcoming Internet2 webinar, designed for Internet2 members, will explore the strategic role of advanced cyberinfrastructure in boosting institutional research capacity. It will highlight how to leverage support and resources available through Internet2 and the broader community. The webinar will take place October 15, 2025.

This session consists of three main parts:

1:  An Overview of Cyberinfrastructure

The conversation moves beyond traditional IT to encompass the specialized technologies, human expertise, and strategic frameworks necessary to support advanced research. Attendees will gain insight into the foundational components of CI, including:

  • High-performance computing environments
  • Secure and scalable data storage
  • Domain-specific software and workflows
  • Advanced networking and data transfer systems
  • The human infrastructure required to support and optimize these systems

2: Strategic Planning for Institutional Impact

Rather than reacting to isolated faculty requests or emerging technologies like AI, institutions must develop a coherent CI strategy that reflects their mission, values, and long-term impact goals for research and workforce development.

This planning process is not merely technical — it is a communicative alignment effort that fosters shared ownership and institutional buy-in.

Topics covered will include:

  • Stakeholder engagement across IT, faculty, libraries, and research support units
  • Assessment of current CI assets, capabilities, gaps, and risks
  • Coordination and communication strategies for implementation
  • Iterative planning practices

3: Leveraging External Resources and Funding Opportunities

Participants will be introduced to the broader CI ecosystem, including resources and support from Internet2 and CaRCC (Campus Research Computing Consortium).

The webinar will highlight:

  • Templates and tools for CI assessment and strategic planning
  • Peer engagement and professional development opportunities
  • Access to federally funded computing systems (such as the U.S. National Science Foundation’s ACCESS program) as part of the full catalog of resources for your researchers and educators
  • Funding mechanisms such as Campus Cyberinfrastructure (CC*) awards, which support infrastructure, innovation, and strategic initiatives

These resources are designed to help institutions build capacity, foster collaboration, and sustain excellence in research and education.
