Orchestrating the Future: How New World Symphony is Redefining Music Education Online
Justin Trieger, senior producer and sound designer for the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy, recently shared how the New World Symphony is innovating with Internet2.
Trieger: “Since its founding in 1987, the New World Symphony (NWS) has sought to preserve the orchestral art form by developing industry leaders and growing audiences. The organization has come to be known as a “laboratory” for how music is taught, shared, and experienced.
A key component of that identity is our experimentation with technologies enabled by Internet2.
Our Fellows have given and received music lessons via the Internet2 Network since the early 2000s — well before the rest of the world was forced to adopt similar technologies during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, our Fellows leave NWS as experts in the pedagogical and technical aspects of online music teaching.
Perhaps the most impactful result from our Internet2 membership is the international group of collaborators we have built over time. We regularly produce activities such as mock auditions and multisite performances with partners across the Americas, Western Europe, and Asia.
These activities leverage cutting-edge tools like LOLA, Ultragrid, and MVTP, offering the best-in-class audiovisual experiences for our Fellows and audiences.
As a result, we have been able to further establish NWS’s international identity as a thought leader in music education while developing best practices to share with the industry at large.
The culmination of these efforts is the annual Network Performing Arts Production Workshop — a gathering of technologists, performing artists, and educators actively engaged in online experimentation for the arts, co-produced by GEANT and Internet2.”
