Internet2 NET+ and Other Cloud Program Updates

Challenges Happen. Community Helps.

Each new season typically comes with its own unique fanfare. In the fall, many of us around the U.S. anticipate turning our clocks back and marvel at the leaves changing color. Much like this time last year when we announced the addition of two new cloud services to the NET+ Program portfolio, we have our own fall fanfare with the launch of the Internet2 NET+ Google AI Education Leadership Program and the forthcoming launch of the NET+ Kajeet Private 5G and Neutral Host Network Platform. Both launches are illustrative of the great outcomes that result when the R&E cloud community works together to address challenges and turn them into opportunities.

Collaborative AI Adoption for Maximum Community Impact

The opportunity? AI is everywhere. The challenge? AI is everywhere. The community-driven approach to maximizing the opportunities while minimizing the risk? The NET+ Google AI Education Leadership Program is a community-driven initiative that brings together ten universities, representing more than 325,000 students, to advance AI adoption responsibly and collaboratively.

This multi institution AI initiative is unique and different from any others you’ve been hearing about. It really captures the collaborative nature of higher ed and how NET+ serves as a workforce multiplier across institutions. I’m excited to see these institutions and Google work together to maximize the opportunities AI presents while navigating the challenges responsibly.

As Jennifer Sparrow, AVP of research and instructional technology & chief academic technology officer at New York University, observed, “Initiatives like Internet2 NET+ Google AI ELP are critical because they provide a trusted, collaborative space for institutions to navigate this complex landscape together, ensuring we can adopt AI confidently and effectively.”

Coming Soon! Secure and Reliable Wireless Coverage

The Challenge? Institutions need options for supporting smart classrooms and research labs, expanded connectivity for underserved areas, and enhanced outreach and extension services. As such, the R&E community asked NET+ to explore private LTE/5G and neutral host networking.

The community’s response? The forthcoming NET+ Kajeet offering reflects more than a year of community-driven work, including developing requirements, testing solutions, negotiating a business model and contract, and rigorously evaluating the technology. Learn more about the service and hear from your peers who helped shape it during the launch webinar on Nov. 20 at 1 p.m. ET.

Collaboration, Conversation, and Collective Knowledge

While I enjoy the excitement of announcing new programs and services (like these and the vendor risk service currently under evaluation), we couldn’t do all that we do without the support of community leaders and champions who work alongside our team every day. Together, we continue to strengthen the community’s existing foundation of collaboration and collective knowledge sharing. We will always be stronger together.

As Cloud Superhero Terry Fernandez observed, “It’s more important than ever for universities to share their experiences and collaborate. A vibrant cloud community enables us to maximize the value of our cloud investments, avoid common pitfalls, and create collective momentum for progress across the sector.”

Through recent webinars and townhalls, the NET+ team has worked diligently to provide forums for the peer-to-peer conversations Terry describes. In addition, the team stays in the trenches working with NET+ volunteers to create the most relevant resources for the community.

Whether it’s limits on human and/or financial resources or more priorities to address than you have hours in a semester, challenges happen. Community definitely helps. We encourage you to call on the community that stands with and for you. We’re here to connect you with the people and resources that might help you resolve the situation sooner rather than later. Chances are someone in the R&E cloud community has been there, done that, and stands ready to share their lessons learned along the way.

In this spirit, I invite you to explore some of the community-driven resources we’ve made available to you. On behalf of the team working with you to bring better cloud services to R&E, we wish you and yours only the best during this final quarter of the year. Whatever challenges it may or may not bring, the NET+ team and the community it supports are here for you.

Webinar Wisdom: Instant Replay

Our recent webinars have offered “wisdom” on key areas of cloud services implementation. Check out these selections from our playlist:

  • Unlock the full potential of your NET+ LabArchives enterprise license. During this webinar, site admins, research leaders, and research administrators learned the ins and outs of maximizing the value of their institution’s investment in LabArchives. Watch the recording (Password: $n0Nu5DG).
  • Eliminate the complexity of managing separate subscriptions, contracts, and integrations across multiple AI providers. The newest service in the NET+ portfolio, Portkey’s AI Gateway offers Centralized governance for GenAI.Watch here to learn more about the service.

Connect with NET+ at EDUCAUSE

Visit with the NET+ Team at EDUCAUSE Annual and hear updates on community activities. NET+ is leading a workshop on HECVAT and third-party risk management that will address AI risk assessments. Get in touch with us if you’re going to be there. We would love to meet up and hear about how your campus is using cloud services.

Cloud Integration and Access Focus Group Forming

Internet2 Network Services is forming a Cloud Integration and Access Focus Group to work with Internet2 staff to provide input on extending the offerings within the current Cloud Connect Service. Initially, the group will work with staff to investigate the feasibility and desirability of adding additional providers directly to the Internet2 Cloud Connect service, just as we do with Google, Microsoft, Oracle, and AWS today.

Adding more providers would allow us to provide more direct connectivity options to myriad service providers, while leveraging the regional and national network infrastructure at the lowest possible cost to our members. The focus group will meet three to five times and deliver a final report by the end of 2025. For more information or to express interest in joining the Cloud Integration and Access Focus Group, reach out to us at cloudconnect_request@internet2.edu.

Spotlight on NET+ Service Providers

We’re pleased to continue inviting NET+ service providers to share articles, blog posts, webinars, or other content relevant to cloud practitioners in the R&E community. Take a look at the resources they shared this quarter:

  • Instructure  The Instructure Product team recapped the key announcements from InstructureCon, walked through recent releases, and shared live demos in this session we held in September. You can access the recording, and slide deck.
  • Pathify Join Pathify’s CampusExperience Summit on November 4. This virtual event brings together IT professionals, student affairs leaders, and higher ed changemakers for an epic day of revolutionary strategies for building resilient institutions and reshaping the digital higher ed space.
