Building on the momentum of the National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) Pilot Inaugural Annual Meeting, several new resources and recordings from the event are now available. These resources support the research and education community in advancing secure and collaborative AI research.

NAIRR Pilot Inaugural Annual Meeting

The NAIRR Pilot Inaugural Annual Meeting, organized and hosted by Internet2 with support from the National Science Foundation, took place from February 19-21, 2025, in Washington, D.C. The event brought together 378 attendees from 47 states representing diverse stakeholders across the AI research landscape. The meeting provided valuable research workforce development opportunities for attendees, enabling both expert and novice researchers to learn from one another.

NAIRR meeting

Lynne Parker from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy provided remarks on national priorities for AI and Katie Antypas from the National Science Foundation gave an overview of the Pilot and its history and successes to date. Keynote presentations featured several distinguished researchers, including David Baker, Joyce Malyn-Smith, David Bau, and Baskar Ganapathysubramanian.

The program also included lightning talks from NAIRR Pilot users, breakout sessions, and valuable networking opportunities.Professionals from across the national research community served on the meeting’s program committee, including Ana Hunsinger, Dana Brunson, and Lauren Michael from Internet2.  The Internet2 convening and digital experience teams supported the event’s planning, execution, and outreach efforts. During the event, Hunsinger, vice president of community engagement and PI for the MS-CC, shared findings from the MS-CC AI Survey Report.

Video: Requesting Resources Via the NAIRR Pilot

Lauren Michael, who co-leads the CaRCC AI Facilitation Materials Working Group alongside Internet2 colleague Timothy Middelkoop, recently presented a comprehensive webinar on accessing no-charge technology resources through the NAIRR Pilot program. This valuable session, which has already been attended by more than 800 people, is now available as a recording.

It prepares AI researchers and educators for developing successful resource allocation requests by covering:

  • Program eligibility and requirements for classroom/educator and research projects
  • Proposal review and resource allocation processes
  • Specific proposal instructions from the NAIRR Pilot portal
  • Strategies for addressing specified review criteria
  • Example resource estimates that quantitatively justify requested NAIRR Pilot resources
These materials were developed with input from NAIRR Pilot operational staff, the CaRCC AI Facilitation Materials Working Group, and representatives from the National Science Foundation (NSF) with support from NSF award #2436057, though they do not necessarily reflect the views of the NSF.
