Steven Wallace, director of the Internet2 Routing Integrity Initiative, was recently elected to the Mutually Agreed Norms for Routing Security (MANRS) Steering Committee. He will serve a three-year term ending in October 2027.

Wallace has 25 years of career experience in the U.S. research and education (R&E) community. He has been a long-time advocate for MANRS participation across the community and served as a MANRS Ambassador in 2021.

In his role with Internet2, Wallace leads collaborative efforts to protect the U.S. R&E community from common routing threats and strengthen the routing security posture of the global R&E network infrastructure, which spans 108 countries and includes 2,600 autonomous systems. Those routing integrity efforts include promoting the adoption of policy-based route filtering and RPKI, integrating DDoS protection, and developing tools to better visualize route policy implementation.

“Recognizing the unique network requirements of the R&E community, my mission is to help integrate MANRS principles into this environment,” Wallace said. “Joining the MANRS Steering Committee builds on my career-long commitment to enhancing our community’s ability to leverage a safer internet in support of its educational and research missions.”

The MANRS Steering Committee, elected by the MANRS community, plays a vital role in coordinating and developing the global initiative to reduce common routing threats. The committee oversees key activities such as making recommendations about MANRS actions and conformance criteria, auditing new applicants, supervising incident handling, and appointing advisors, ambassadors, and fellows.
