At TechEX Advance CAMP, the IAM community leads the charge.

Every year at the Internet2 Technology Exchange, professionals from across the identity and access management (IAM) field gather to address the research and education community’s most pressing opportunities and challenges.

Advance CAMP (ACAMP) at TechEX25 is an opportunity for community members — from IAM novices to late-career IT professionals — to lead conversations on myriad IAM topics.

ACAMP is a unique part of the TechEX25 program. Held on the last two days of the conference, ACAMP is a community-driven process in which attendees pitch their own topics, run demos of tools, and participate in breakout discussions — up to five each hour. Attendees build the agenda live, on the spot.

Ahead of TechEX25, held in Denver, Colo., from Dec. 8-12, we are looking back at previous years to review the transformative discussions that occurred at ACAMP.

Four major themes emerged — challenges that cut across institutions and dominated breakout discussions.

As a bonus, we’re also sharing one big IAM conversation that we know will be top of mind at ACAMP this year. Get a preview of the discussions the IAM community will dig into when they gather in Denver.

Four Major Themes From Recent ACAMP Sessions

What We Expect The IAM Community Will Discuss at ACAMP 2025

Predicting ACAMP topics isn’t easy. TechEX attendees come from diverse institutions all across the world. Every attendee has their own institutional issues — and solutions — to talk about.

However, ACAMP is where IAM professionals come to diagnose, explore, and resolve issues that pervade the research and higher education (R&E) community.

This year, we have an informed guess about what the IAM community may want to discuss based on survey data collected earlier this year.

In September 2025, InCommon distributed the Identity Verification and Fraud survey (now closed) to understand how U.S. campuses manage identity verification and fraud prevention challenges. This was done in response to a request from the National Institutes of Health to support identity assurance for access to specific data repositories.

One month later, during a Thread Meet Up, InCommon shared some insights they learned. Participants represented a range of institutional roles, including IT and security leadership, IAM teams, library services, and admissions. The discussion revealed that institutions are grappling with fragmented, decentralized processes across departments, each with varying requirements and data-collection needs.

Based on this feedback, expect ACAMP breakout sessions on Fraud Prevention, Identity Proofing processes, and Identity Assurance Deployment strategies.

These conversations will likely explore deployment guidance and integrating Identity Proofing status into core IAM systems — a natural continuation of previous ACAMP sessions on identity-first architecture.

Other likely topics might include OpenID Federation, Identity Data Minimization and Lifecycle Management, and SAML Subject Identifier deployment.

With ACAMP’s format, the real agenda emerges from whatever challenges attendees bring to the room.

ACAMP and IAM at TechEX25

While ACAMP is held on the last two days (Dec. 11-12) of TechEX25, it is part of the larger Identity & Access Management Track. Other IAM session topics in that track include the REFEDS Assurance Framework, open source strategies, hands-on Grouper workshops, and much more.

You don’t want to miss out on this opportunity to learn directly from your peers and participate in one of the year’s most important gatherings for IAM professionals in R&E.
