Course Overview

This introductory course is designed for cloud computing beginners who want to facilitate or develop research workflows on the cloud. In just three hours, users will learn how to deploy cloud computing and storage and build a Jupyter Notebook server to run research code.

Workshop Details

- You will use AWS Academy to log on to the cloud console
- Provision an EC2 instance
- Learn fundamental networking and security concepts
- Learn about IAM and VPC
- Learn about the different kinds of cloud storage
- Provision an s3 bucket
- Use the AWS CLI to create resources
- Put together all the pieces you have learned to create a Jupyter Notebook server that you can access from your computer
- Clone code from Github into the Jupyter Notebook Instance
- Upload and download data from s3
- Learn about Jupyter Notebook security
- Learn ways to view and manage resources through the AWS console
- Calculate costs
- Turn off/terminate resources
- Best practices for maintaining a secure and cost effective cloud environment
- Writing grants
