Update: Ongoing Instructure Security Incident and NET+ Support
Communication Date: Wednesday, May 13, 2026
We know the focus and pressure on your leadership team remains significant as you navigate the impact of the Instructure Canvas incident on your campus. We are writing you today to ensure you have a full picture of the steps Internet2 has taken on your institution’s behalf over the past several days and to share the resources immediately available to your team.
Throughout this incident, our priority has been to leverage the collective scale of the NET+ community to ensure transparency and responsiveness from Instructure leadership. We communicated frequently with the lead contact at each NET+ Instructure Canvas institution, sharing information and resources as they became available.
During that time, Internet2 leadership and the NET+ team remained in active conversations with Instructure leadership and the NET+ Instructure Canvas Service Advisory Group (SAG). These efforts ensured your institutional needs remained the priority and resulted in:
- Emergency Service Advisory Group Meeting: On Friday, May 8, Internet2 held an emergency session of the NET+ Instructure Canvas SAG with Instructure’s Melissa Loble, Chief Academic Officer, and Casey Sato, Senior Director of Customer Success. This meeting allowed us to gather community concerns and questions, quickly pivot our May 12 webinar to a town hall format focused on the incident, and secure participation from the Instructure leadership team to address questions during the town hall. This meeting also secured an interim forensic fact sheet from CrowdStrike, Instructure’s incident response partner.
- All-Subscriber Community Town Hall: On Tuesday, May 12, Internet2 hosted a live town hall that brought together Instructure’s Melissa Loble, Casey Sato, and Jody Saylor; over 235 participants; Karin Roberts, Chair of the NET+ Instructure Canvas SAG; and Internet2 staff. The town hall covered both pre-submitted and live questions on incident scope, event timeline, legal considerations, and Instructure’s commitments.
Resources Available to NET+ Instructure Canvas Subscribers
The following materials are available to NET+ Instructure Canvas subscribing institutions and are not publicly distributed. To request access to any of these resources, please email netplus@internet2.edu:
- CrowdStrike Interim Fact Sheet — a summary of forensic findings to date.
- Redacted copies of the Internet2–Instructure Business Agreement. As a NET+ subscriber, your institution holds third-party beneficiary rights to this agreement and may enforce its terms.
- Recording and slide deck from the May 12 town hall.
Our Ongoing Commitment
Internet2 will continue to leverage our escalation and advocacy channels and keep the community informed as Instructure provides additional updates, including written responses to the questions that were not fully addressed during the May 12 town hall.
The NET+ team will continue communicating with your institution about this incident and any related follow-up through our standard NET+ Instructure Canvas subscriber newsletter and quarterly town hall series. By the end of the month, we plan to distribute a follow-up newsletter with additional resources and updates. If there are colleagues at your institution who would like to receive our newsletters and communications about the NET+ Instructure Canvas program in general, they may subscribe to the mailing list by following this link.
Looking forward, we will work with the NET+ Instructure Canvas SAG and subscriber institutions to identify lessons learned and explore collective ways to mitigate the impact of incidents. We welcome additional feedback and encourage your institution to share it with us.
Thank you for being part of the NET+ community. The ongoing advocacy work described above is made possible by your institution’s participation in NET+ and the scale of our collective investment.
Please reach out to netplus@internet2.edu with any questions or feedback.

Dear NET+ Instructure Subscriber Community,
We know the pressure on your team remains high as this week’s challenges continue. We are writing to share the information we have to date from Instructure, and update you on what Internet2 is doing to support you during this time.
Instructure published a Security Incident Update & FAQs page on their website. They have shared that it reflects everything they know at this moment and that they will continue to update it as new details come in.
In the meantime, Internet2 can help facilitate access to applicable NET+ program agreement materials, which include certain third-party beneficiary rights, and support coordination with Instructure. We encourage institutions to consult their legal counsel regarding institution-specific legal questions or decisions. If you would like to review the agreement materials, please email Tiffany Frank at netplus@internet2.edu.
Internet2 leadership and the NET+ team are in active conversations with Melissa Loble, Casey Sato, and Jody Sailor at Instructure, including discussions on remediation efforts, the ongoing investigation, and cybersecurity measures.
To reinforce these efforts at the community governance level, the NET+ Instructure Service Advisory Group is convening this afternoon to meet with Instructure leadership and again next Wednesday to discuss this matter and advocate for transparency and timely communication.
We are committed to providing updates to you when we have relevant information or guidance to share, and we will continue to leverage Internet2 escalation and advocacy channels to ensure stronger support and responsiveness.
If you have any additional questions, please reach out to us at netplus@internet2.edu.
Rest assured that we are giving this matter our full attention and advocating for the transparency and support your institution needs and expects.
Regards,
Sean O’Brien
Associate Vice President, Internet2 NET+
