Hurricane Ida delivered catastrophic winds, torrential rains, and life-threatening flash flooding as it made landfall in Louisiana as a powerful Category 4 hurricane on Sunday afternoon. Our thoughts are with everyone that has been affected by Ida.
Earlier this morning, at 6:16 a.m. EDT, we lost the optical backbone between Baton Rouge and Pensacola, and began routing traffic through alternate paths. We are working with our partners to restore any impacted services as soon as it is safe to do so.
We are continuing to actively monitor and manage network services in anticipation of any additional impact and reduced resiliency. As a reminder, an internal NOC ticket has been opened (PRB0048322) to track all Ida-related activities and to provide a tie-back for member tickets opened as a result of the hurricane impacts.

Internet2 is closely monitoring the progress of Hurricane Ida, where a hurricane watch has been issued for western Louisiana to the Mississippi/Alabama border, and a tropical storm watch has been issued for the Mississippi/Alabama border to the Alabama/Florida border.
According to the National Hurricane Center’s public advisory issued today at 2 p.m. EDT, Ida is expected to be a dangerous major hurricane when it approaches the northern Gulf Coast on Sunday.
The Internet2 NOC is actively monitoring and managing network services in anticipation of potential impact and reduced resiliency along the Gulf Coast. An internal NOC ticket has been opened (PRB0048322) to track all Ida-related activities and to provide a tie-back for member tickets opened as a result of the potential hurricane impacts.

Considering the strength of this hurricane and the amount of projected rainfall, it is possible we will see service impacts to a major part of the community infrastructure in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Should issues occur, traffic will be rerouted through alternate paths; this could place increased demands on infrastructure in Houston, Kansas City, Chicago, and Atlanta. Internet2 will work diligently with our partners to restore any impacted services as soon as it is safe to do so.
We encourage all of our members and partners in the region to please take all appropriate precautions and make any necessary preparations. As the weather can be unpredictable, we will continue to monitor the progress of the hurricane as it develops and until the danger of additional damaging effects has dissipated.
Our thoughts are with everyone that may be affected by Hurricane Ida.
