There’s a password for that and for this, and so on. New research indicates that on average people have approximately 100 passwords, which is 25 percent more than they had before the start of the pandemic.
What would it take to rid the world of passwords? This question has been asked for many years and led to standards like U2F, UAF, FIDO2, and WebAuthn. With adoption still low and 2FA phishing on the rise, how does the research and education community enable strong, phishing-resistant authentication for the masses who don’t have security keys?

“Hello Passkey, Goodbye Passwords!,” the July webinar for InCommon’s IAM Online series, will examine the evolving landscape for strong, phishing-resistant authentication and take a deep dive into passkey—the experiences it enables and the standards making it possible. Our speaker is Tim Cappalli, identity standards architect, Microsoft Identity, and Heather Flanagan, technical liaison for SeamlessAccess and principal at Spherical Cow Consulting, is our moderator.
“This is an important topic to address with the research and education community,” Cappalli said. “R&E users are sensitive to friction for online services, and signing in remains frustrating to them.”
“One of the biggest misconceptions is that ‘passkey’ is a whole new protocol stack,” he continued. “I hope the key takeaway from our discussion will be that we finally have a secure, password replacement that will be directly accessible to all.”
Join us for this important discussion on July 20 at 1 p.m. ET.
