Eduroam, which is rapidly growing globally, has had much success in the USA and will soon reach 100 participating institutions. Available to the research and education community, the eduroam service provides instant, authenticated and encrypted network access, mainly to Wi-Fi networks, to all participants of the federation. Connect once to the eduroam service at your local institution, and you are ready to roam regionally, nationally, and internationally—with no other steps required.

Internet2 and EDUCAUSE invite institutions to participate in a spring 2013 pilot involving electronic textbooks (eTexts) and in some cases a broader set of complementary materials (eContent). The Spring 2013 pilot expands upon earlier efforts by offering several packages whose participating publishers, e-reader platforms, and licensing models vary. If your institution is interested in joining the pilot, you must express your interest by October 19.

The Fall 2012 Internet2 Member Meeting is on! The theme for this fall's meeting, held Sep. 30-Oct. 4 in Philadelphia, PA, builds upon concepts introduced at the spring meeting: Community, Innovation, and Transformation. There are a number of excellent general session speakers scheduled, as well as a celebration of the launch of the new Internet2 Network. Member Meetings bring our community together for interactive discussions about new and ongoing work, provide a venue for making connections and forming new collaborations.

The U.S. UCAN Workshop scheduled for October 4, 2012, in Philadelphia, PA, is a working meeting of the U.S. UCAN Pilot Affiliates (representing 14 state and regional networks) that welcomes all interested parties, including representatives from Community Anchor Institutions (CAIs) and their professional organizations. The workshop will address opportunities and issues facing this CAI-focused community of practice and explore how to spur innovation in the delivery of applications and services that use advanced broadband networks to support the missions of CAIs.

Identity Services professionals are invited to register for Advance CAMP, taking place in Philadelphia, October 4-5, immediately following the Fall 2012 Internet2 Member Meeting. The Advance CAMP will feature an unconference-style agenda providing substantial time for exploration and discussion of topics and work items of general interest to participants.

Internet2 has named Susannah Spellman Executive Director of the United States Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN). In her new role, Spellman will lead Internet2’s efforts to support the broadband needs of community anchor institutions from around the country. She will oversee the Internet2 K20 initiative and rural health care program, and explore new ways to leverage Internet2’s national research and education network for the benefit of public safety, public media and other public institutions. “Susannah’s experience with the nation’s government and business leaders in broadband service and community anchor institutions will greatly benefit U.S. UCAN,” said Internet2 Vice President John S. Morabito. “In collaboration with regional research and education networks across the country, her leadership will assist anchor institutions in serving their communities with telemedicine, distance learning, and other innovative applications.”

Empowering people to be global education consumers. That's how community anchor institution innovator, Brady Kraft, Director of Technology at Idaho Education Network (IEN), describes what he does for a living. His primary driving force? Working to make sure everyone at the school, district and state levels has true equality of access. His vision for tomorrow's "native digital citizens"—even the rural ones? That they will be free to make education and career choices unbounded by bandwidth availability. IEN connects to the Internet2 Network via Idaho Regional Optical Network (IRON).

The Internet2 staff and community are saddened to hear of the passing of our colleague from the University of Washington, R.L. “Bob” Morgan. We are grateful that Bob was able to attend the Spring 2012 Internet2 Member Meeting and be recognized for his many years of service to the community and friendship to many of us. He will be missed, but his legacy lives on in the work and relationships within the entire Internet2 community and beyond.

In June, the University of Michigan Department of Dance, with the Paul Taylor Dance Company, presented a live master class for dignitaries in China to celebrate a new 10Gbps link between Internet2 and the Chinese Research and Education Network (CERNET). The live performance over the research and education networks was hosted at the James and Anne Duderstadt Center on the Michigan campus with technical support from the Computer Aided Engineering Network and the Duderstadt Center Video Studio teams.

Internet2's Grouper Toolkit will be discussed at the Jasig Sakai Conference the week of June 11, 2012. Bill Thompson (Unicon, Inc) and Shilen Patel (Duke University) will present "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish - An Introduction to Grouper." In addition, Erik Froese (Hallway Technologies) will talk on "Integrating Grouper and OAE." The NSF's new Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (CDS&E) program is an opportunity for U.S. research universities to use Internet2's advanced network and collaboration facilities for innovation. CDS&E recognizes the importance of data-enabled, data-intensive, data-centric science, and responds to the needs of scientific computation and the explosion in digital data production. The first proposal submission window for CDS&E is June 3 to July 3, with $5 million in available funding. Various NSF directorates and offices collaborate in the program and there are later windows with additional funding. Internet2 staff stand ready to assist you in preparing your proposal.

Senior higher education executives announced at the Spring 2012 Internet2 Member Meeting that they will use the nation's fastest, coast-to-coast network to implement new technologies that support scientific "big data" and cloud applications to drive innovation in global collaborative research. The intent is to strengthen the nation's position as a global leader in research and education for decades to come, and at the same time help control higher education costs. Arizona State University, Case Western Reserve University, University of Cincinnati, Clemson University, Georgia Tech, Indiana University, The Ohio State University, and regional partners OARnet, I-Light and SOX will pilot innovations that support the "big data" needs of global researchers. The technologies bundled in the Internet2 Network create the first open, national-scale testbed of revolutionary software-defined networking (SDN) and OpenFlow standards, combined with the abundant bandwidth of the world's first transcontinental network deployment of 100GE technology. Nearly 800 attendees heard the Internet2 NET+ Services announcements at the Spring 2012 Internet2 Member Meeting. The Global Network Reach focus area will highlight efforts that broaden networking capabilities with International Partner organizations in support of global science & research. Sessions include presentations from Internet2 partners in India and China, a panel on the future of global NRENs, and a presentation by Internet2 members on the Global Campus Initiative. At the International Updates and Strategies session on Sunday, attendees will learn about recent activities and strategies for aligning efforts in the international realm, and the Emerging NREN session will focus on intersecting interests from networking organizations around the world.

Learn more about the web portal project at the upcoming Member Meeting. In this blog post, the portal project's capabilities visualize Internet2 network traffic in a biomedical research “big data” case study and describe community collaboration that is working towards improving the ability to diagnose, treat and prevent cancer. In-depth demonstrations of the portal’s current capabilities will occur during the Performance Working Group meeting on 4/23, at 11am in Salon B, and at the Internet2 Advanced Network Services session  on 4/25, 3:00pm in Salon J. Whether you need to catch up, gear up, reach orbit, or just take it to the next level, InCommon participants—both new and experienced—are invited to this fast-paced, information-filled workshop, April 26–27, in Arlington, Virginia. Sessions will cover a wide range of topics related to federated identity, certificates, assurance, and community collaborations. Two tracks are offered: "reaching orbit" and "after you've achieved orbit." Plus plenty of time for informative hallway conversation, of course. Keynote speakers include: Ian Glazer, research director on Gartner's IT Professionals Identity and Privacy Strategies team; Anil John, from the Federal Identity, Credential and Access Management (FICAM) program; and Ken Klingenstein, Senior Director, Middleware and Security at Internet2. The InCommon Confab immediately follows the Internet2 Spring Member Meeting, but registration and attendance are separate.
