On June 21, IEEE, the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology, announced the ratification of IEEE 802.3ba, a new standard governing 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps Ethernet operations. IEEE 802.3ba is expected to trigger further expansion of the 40 Gigabit and 100 Gigabit Ethernet family of technologies by driving new development efforts, as well as providing new aggregation speeds that will enable 10 Gbps Ethernet network deployments.

Suppliers and consumers of identity services are gathering at Advance CAMP: The Second Identity Services Summit, June 23-25 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Building on last year's Identity Services Summit, participants will discuss specific steps in moving towards de facto identity standardization, particularly with open source software, services and frameworks. The Shibboleth Workshop Series will kick off at Northwestern University July 28 and 29. Attendees will leave with the installation and configuration experience to deploy the Shibboleth web single sign-on system and leverage it to access resources and contracted services through the InCommon Federation. These are two separate workshops, with the identity provider session on July 28, and the service provider session on July 29.

The Call for Proposals for the Fall 2010 Internet2 Member Meeting is now open! The Internet2 community will be treated to a dose of southern hospitality when the annual fall meeting heads down  to Atlanta from November 1-4, 2010. This meeting is hosted by Georgia Tech, Georgia State, and FLR/SoX. Submissions are due by July 30, and full details—including the submission form—are available online.

InCommon has announced the launch of a new trust service that will offer unlimited server and personal certificates to U.S. colleges and universities. The project is in beta testing right now, with the plan to roll out unlimited server certs by the end of the summer, then roll out personal certs. As teams from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) respond to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI) is providing NOAA teams with access to high-speed networking connections. Without LONI's connection to the national Internet2 Network, NOAA would have had to rely on the low-bandwidth connections available in public places to send large data files and coastal aerial imagery to coordinate response efforts between federal and on-site teams.

Chris Hancok, CEO at AARNet, Australia's Research and Education Network, recently provided a  briefing [video | pdf] on Australia’s National Broadband Initiative. The initiative seeks to upgrade Australia’s telecommunications infrastructure in order to deliver high speed broadband fiber to 90% of Australian household, and AARNet is playing a key role, both in leading the development and serving as a test bed for this network. Hancock shared AARNet's experiences– a valuable perspective for our community as we look to undertake similar initiatives in the U.S.

Internet2's Spring Member Meeting transported attendees 4,850 feet underground to explore America's newest networking frontier. The live HD videoconference showcased how the former Homestake gold mine in South Dakota is being transformed into a high-tech national Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL). Congratulations to the four winners of the 2010 Internet2 IDEA Awards: EchoDamp, a multi-channel audio mixer and echo controller for videoconference-based musical and other collaboration; the Research and Education Data Depot network (REDDnet) Data Logistics Toolkit and model for storage facilities supporting data-intensive collaboration; Worldview, a real-time 3-D network monitoring and visualization system; and Shibboleth, a federated Web-based single sign-on software that manages authorized access to protected online resources.

The Intermedia Festival, April 23-25, is a unique and futuristic series of concerts and events highlighting telematic and media arts performed by artists throughout North America and Europe. More than 100 performers will travel to Indianapolis; others will participate through interactively with collaborators at the festival over advanced networks. Performances over high-bandwidth networks will occur between Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis and University of Calgary, University of Cincinnati, and Florida State University.  Featured guest artists will include Pamela Z, Luke Dubois, Bora Yoon, Dance Kaleidoscope, Big Robot and Matthew Burtner.

Attendees of the Internet2 Spring Member Meeting heard details of the Obama Administration's innovation agenda firsthand from the nation's first ever CTO Aneesh Chopra who provided the keynote for the meeting's first general session. Members of the Internet2 community gather in Arlington during the Spring Member Meeting where they will hold face-to-face meetings of numerous R&D Working Groups: Transport, Performance, Information Services, ION, and High Energy/Nuclear Physics. Spring Member Meeting is a great time to catch up with InCommon, hear about the latest in federated identity management, and meet up with colleagues. InCommon's leadership will provide informational and operational updates for participants at the InCommon Forum, Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. Additionally, the chair and vice-chair of the steering committee, Kevin Morooney and Jack Suess, will provide a wide-ranging discussion about the current and future state of the federation in InCommon Grows Up Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Both the Forum (via Adobe Connect) and InCommon Grows Up (via Netcast) will be available to remote participants. The Internet2 Security area will be holding several sessions at the upcoming Internet2 Spring Member Meeting, including a Disaster Recovery and Planning BoF. Get ready for some exciting middleware sessions at Spring Member Meeting, on topics ranging from identity management for a virtual international science organization to federated collaboration approaches.  In addition to the track sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Middleware working group sessions on Monday will feature several intriguing presentations.  For example, the MACE-Directories Working Group will host a presentation on enabling participants in R&E Federations to exchange SAML messages for purposes beyond Web Single Sign On.

At 1:06 p.m. (CEST) on March 30, a new era was launched for particle physics as the first particles collided inside the 16-mile-long Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. Internet2 and other advanced networks provide transatlantic connectivity from the facility to the U.S., and have deployed networks that can reliably transport the massive amounts of LHC data to the more than 1700 U.S. scientists who will analyze it, hoping to solve some of the most profound mysteries of the universe.
