Internet2 regularly showcases our members' efforts on behalf of advanced research and education networking. We not only encourage Internet2 members to share their achievements with the community, but also the interesting people, events, developments and collaborations that make those achievements possible. This year, Internet2 will be showcasing network services like ION and prototype services like Phoebus, while highlighting Internet2 Network upgrades and planned 100G capabilities needed to support the extreme scale future. The latest sessions in the Shibboleth Workshop Series, to be held at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, will provide technical installation and configuration experience. (2) Flying to GSP can be cost-effective if booked early. (3) Several hands-on and in-depth tutorials are planned for Sunday (one full-day, one half-day, and two 90-minute offerings). Showcase Image A Call for Proposals has been issued for the upcoming Winter 2011 ESCC/Internet2 Joint Techs, hosted by Clemson University (January 30-February 3). The event will focus on Advanced Infrastructures, Emerging Technologies, and Convergence on campuses; a few talks on performance, security, and IPv6 also will be included. Proposals for
Showcase Image EDUCAUSE, Internet2, National LambdaRail and The Quilt join research and education networking organizations across the U.S. in commending the FCC decision to expand broadband options for schools and libraries under E-rate rules. Under the new rules, announced September 23, 2010, these institutions will now be able to use E-rate funds to acquire network dark fiber as well as lit services from nonprofit R&E networks and local governments as well as designated commercial providers.

The Fall Speaker Series continues on Thursday, November 11, 11:00 a.m. Eastern, with acclaimed motivational speaker and organization consultant, Dave Carey, former prisoner of war and author of The Ways We Choose. Showcase Image InCommon has rolled out the InCommon Cert Service, providing unlimited SSL certificates – and soon unlimited personal certs – for one low annual fee. This service was developed by, and for, the research and higher education community. The program includes certs for all of your domains, including professional societies, athletics sites, and others. If you own the domain, it is included. For details on the InCommon Cert Service, see www.incommon.org/cert. InCommon is an operating unit of Internet2.
Showcase Image The U.S. UCAN BTOP award efforts are moving forward and are now focused on two parallel initiatives in coordination with councils, Board and award partners. Rob Vietzke, Internet2 Executive Director of Network Services, is leading the implementation of the Internet2 network upgrade and NTIA compliance.  Gary Bachula, Internet2 VP of External Relations, with staff and collaborators, is reaching out to leaders of organizations that represent K12 schools, libraries, health care IT, emergency management, community colleges, and other anchor community groups with a focus on bring all of the anchor institution representative groups to a common table for discussions on how to build and sustain a U.S. UCAN organization. Documents that detail the Internet2 activities are available to Internet2 members in a new BTOP Award Info Space which includes “members-only” and public content. The space can be accessed using InCommon credentials. Follow the instructions page to create an account and gain access to the members-only content on the site.
Showcase Image Registration is open for Day CAMP: Getting Started With InCommon, to take place November 4–5 in Atlanta, Georgia, immediately following the Internet2 Fall Member Meeting. The program is designed for those considering joining InCommon as well as new participants that need some help getting to the next step. Attendees will discuss the value proposition, learn what it takes to begin accessing federated services, link up with consultants, services and experienced colleagues, and leave with concrete, practical information.
Showcase Image The new InCommon Cert Service provides unlimited SSL and personal certs for one low annual fee, serving the research and higher education community. The InCommon Online Forum, Tuesday, September 14, at 1 p.m. EDT will provide information about this service, drawing on the implementation experience of the University of California Berkeley.
Showcase Image On August 12, the National Science Foundation awarded a three-year $2.65 million grant to the Internet2 Middleware Initiative to develop a toolkit to ease access management of distributed resources for the science and research communities. The toolkit will combine foundational authentication and authorization tools developed by the Internet2 community over the last decade, such as the Shibboleth Federated and Single Sign-on System, Grouper Groups Management Toolkit, and COmanage Collaborative Management Platform.
Showcase Image Internet2 held a successful and well received invitational workshop on "Collaborative Data-Driven Security for High Performance Networks" at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL) on August 17 and 18, 2010. This was a follow-on to a similar workshop held in May, 2009. The fundamental challenge addressed was: how can we better work together to share data and make a difference when dealing with operational cyber-security issues? Showcase Image Time is running out! September 24, 2010, is the deadline for demo proposals and poster session proposals for the Fall 2010 Internet2 Member Meeting. We hope to feature demos that use the available 10G circuit to showcase how advanced networking is enabling new methods of scientific communication, collaboration and visualization in the research and education community—often through international partnerhips. Applications from all disciplines are welcome!
Showcase Image Registration is now open for the Fall 2010 Internet2 Member Meeting, scheduled for November 1-4, 2010, in Atlanta, Georgia. Internet2 Member Meetings bring the member community together for interactive discussions about new and ongoing work and provide a venue for members to make connections and form new collaborations.
Showcase Image Grouper version 1.6.0 is now available for download. The Grouper Groups Management Toolkit enables project managers, departments, institutions, and end-users to create and manage institutional and personal groups. The new version features web services enhancements, a new provisioning connector, ESB integration, and integration with Kuali Rice. Read about how University of Pennsylvania plans to use the integration in this new version of Grouper to leverage Kuali Rice workflow capabilities.
Showcase Image Internet2 and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have announced a partnership to deploy a highly reliable, high-capacity network to significantly enhance the capabilities of NOAA researchers and their connections with key high-performance computing sites across the nation. Funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the new "NWave" network will be built on a set of 10 Gbps dedicated waves on the national Internet2 Network and support 80 terabytes of climate research data per day.
Showcase Image Internet2 announced on July 7 the appointment of H. David (Dave) Lambert as president and CEO. Lambert brings over 30 years of distinguished experience in the advanced research and education networking and information technology fields. Lambert replaced Douglas Van Houweling as Internet2's president and CEO effective July 13, 2010. Lambert previously served as VP for Information Services and CIO at Georgetown University where he successfully moved the university forward in the strategic application of information technology across a wide range of programs and services.
Showcase Image The NTIA has awarded $62.5+ million in stimulus funding to Internet2, NLR, Indiana University, the Northern Tier Network Consortium. Together with their vendor partners Ciena, Cisco, Infinera and Juniper Networks, the collaborators propose the construction of the United States Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN), an advanced network that will link regional networks across the nation, including other projects funded through ARRA. U.S. UCAN’s advanced infrastructure will—in partnership with regional and state research and education networks—connect America's community anchor institutions. For more info, www.usucan.org.
Showcase Image The first perfSONAR Workshop, co-sponsored by NSF and DoE, will be held in Arlington, VA on July 8-9, 2010. This 1.5-day workshop will bring together researchers, applications developers, network operators, network managers, and others with an interest in network research and network performance monitoring and measurement. The goal of the workshop is to use perfSONAR as a focus to cross-fertilize ideas from the network research community and the needs of the research and education networks around the world, fostering wide-spread deployment, and documenting best practices.
Showcase Image On June 21, IEEE, the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology, announced the ratification of IEEE 802.3ba, a new standard governing 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps Ethernet operations. IEEE 802.3ba is expected to trigger further expansion of the 40 Gigabit and 100 Gigabit Ethernet family of technologies by driving new development efforts, as well as providing new aggregation speeds that will enable 10 Gbps Ethernet network deployments.
